Thoracic Catheter
A Thoracic Catheter, also known as a chest drain, chest tube, or pleural drain, is a medical device used to remove air, fluids, or pus from the intrathoracic space to prevent or treat conditions such as pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, or empyema. Its primary purpose is to restore the negative pressure within the pleural space, facilitating lung expansion, and ensuring proper respiratory function.
It is most suitable for post-operative drainage after cardiothoracic and thoracic surgery. Known for precise dimensions, perfect finish and durability.
The catheter has numerical depth marks at 2cm increments for easy and precise positioning and the beveled connector can be cropped to form an integral funnel connector.
Thoracic Catheter Use: Key Insights
The utilization of thoracic catheters is essential in the treatment of various pleural cavity conditions that can significantly impair respiratory function. By effectively removing air, fluid, or pus, thoracic catheters play a critical role in managing pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusions, and empyema. This intervention is crucial for re-establishing the lung's ability to expand and ensuring adequate gas exchange, thus preventing the potential for respiratory distress and facilitating patient recovery. The process involves meticulous insertion, careful monitoring, and a comprehensive understanding of pleural dynamics to minimize risks and achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. Thoracic catheter use, therefore, is a fundamental aspect of respiratory and critical care, highlighting its importance in saving lives and improving patient well-being in acute and chronic scenarios.
Features of Thoracic Catheter
Atraumatic and rounded open distal end with smooth eyes.
With Radio opaque line and mark at every 2 cms from the last eye to ascertain the depth of placement.
Cross side eyes to prevent tissue aspiration.
Matching size loose connector which facilitates easy connection to the drainage system.
The proximal end is fitted with pull through tongue for easy insertion.
Clear thermosensitive PVC catheter provides easy visualization of drainage characteristics.
Radiopaque Sentinel Line tubing with Sentinel Eye catheter permits location verification by X-ray.
Smooth side-eyes and open distal tip allows consistent catheter flow and easy insertion.
Numeric depth marks at 2cm increments facilitate precise positioning.
Soft, frosted, and kink resistant PVC tubing
Also available with DEHP-free tube.
